One way the history of capitalism can be written:
as a sustained erosion of/assault on the most fundamental elements of genuine human community, replacing them with various forms of quasi-community and with spurious, meaningless forms of individualism.
This impairs our ability to:
- help each other,
- learn from each other,
- act jointly, and
- collectively constitute the meaning which imbues our individual existences with significance.
Every succeeding generation, torn more and more from the wellspring of real community, tries to supply its needs through individual consumption, turning itself into a "community" of mass consumption. This would be ironic if it didn't so perfectly fit the needs of the power hierarchy structure which feeds on it.
